Our House

Higher Orchard is a charming Victorian house, built in 1864, in the unique medieval village of Dunster. Within the Exmoor National Park, the house stands in an elevated position, looking over the village and church towards the castle. Although in a very quiet location on the edge of the village, two minutes walk from the house takes you to the village centre with its shops, pubs and excellent restaurants.

The Garden

Graham's family have lived in Dunster for almost a century and he has good knowledge to help you make the most of your time in this beautiful area. As well as it's ancient castle, Dunster still retains it's well known Yarn Market (1609); Water Mill (Still working) and Packhorse Bridge. Higher Orchard was built on ground adjacent to the orchards of the Benedictine Priory (founded in 1009). The Dovecote and Tithe Barn, are also part of the Priory, are just down the street. close to the home.

Dunster high Street

Keen walkers will find an excellent network of waymarked paths from Dunster, the nearest being 50 yards from our door. Just 10 minutes or so gentle climb from the house will take you to open views of some of the most spectacular scenery in West Somerset. Here can be seen the distant Quantock Hills, Exmoor and, across the sea, the Welsh coast. Guided walks by National Park staff are frequently available, and an excellent bus service links Dunster to other Exmoor villages. Horse riding, fishing and golf are all within two or three miles.

The west Somerset Steam Railway has a station at Dunster, and runs from Minehead East to Bishops Lydeard, where a bus connection can be made to Taunton (4 miles)
